Stephen Jones

Hello,

Thank you for visiting my bio. I am a Canadian originally from British Columbia, though I have been residing in Paris, France since 2019. From a young age, I have been passionate about drawing and creating. I spent much of my school years doodling and sketching, a habit that has stayed with me throughout my life.

I have also struggled with anxiety for many years and, over time, have explored various methods to manage it. From medication to breathing exercises, I’ve found that nothing calms my mind quite like picking up a pencil and putting my thoughts onto paper. Drawing and painting have become my most effective form of therapy, helping me maintain mental balance and stability.

In my professional life, I work as an electrician, specializing in troubleshooting and building maintenance. When the workday is done, I return home to my wife and two young daughters. Once they are asleep, I dedicate my late hours to my art, often working until 1 or 2 a.m. I invite you to explore the depths of my imagination and the creations that emerge during those quiet, late-night hours.

Inspirations

I typically do not plan ahead when beginning a new image. Instead, I prefer to create spontaneously, letting my ideas emerge organically in the moment. If I were to explain where these ideas come from, I would attribute much of it to my dreams, past psychedelic experiences, and my current mental state. Additionally, I believe a significant portion of my work is influenced by my subconscious, or perhaps a combination of the myriad visual stimuli I encounter daily.

I also experience colors in unconventional ways—often seeing hues in objects or scenarios that are typically devoid of color. For example, a scene depicting a person using drugs in a corner of a building might evoke a sense of vivid reds, purples, and blues, even in an environment that is primarily grey and black. This response could stem from the emotional state of the individual or from a deeper analysis of the subtle colors present on their skin. I’ve found that there is always more to uncover when examining a scene closely, revealing layers of meaning and emotion that are not immediately apparent.

Aspirations

As an electrician, I am eager to integrate my knowledge of electricity into my artistic practice. My goal is to create works that incorporate lighting or moving elements, as I believe light plays a crucial role in shaping both the environment and the way we perceive images. Ultimately, I envision creating an exhibition that blends the traditional nature of a typical gallery with an immersive installation of vibrant LEDs, which would be synchronized with the style of the paintings. This would serve to enhance the ambiance and mood, offering a more dynamic and engaging experience for viewers.
